Following it's release in UK cinemas the previous month, Stanley Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange' opened in theaters in the US on this day in 1972. Based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel, Kubrick's film presents a nightmarish dystopian vision of a near-future Britain.

The movie divided opinion and was controversial due to its depictions of graphic violence. Kubrick described his film as "A social satire dealing with the question of whether behavioural psychology and psychological conditioning are dangerous new weapons for a totalitarian government to use to impose vast controls on its citizens and turn them into little more than robots."
