'All the President's Men' opened in theaters across North America on this day in 1976. Alan J. Pakula's political thriller follows Washington Post journalists Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) and Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) as they uncover details of the Watergate break-in that eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
Over the course of months, Redford and Hoffman visited the offices of The Washington Post, where they attended news conferences and researched their roles. The Post refused permission to film in its newsroom so it was recreated meticulously by set designers at Burbank Studios at a cost of $200,000. Redford and Hoffman divided top billing with Redford billed above Hoffman on the posters and trailers while Hoffman took top spot on the film credits.
The movie was a commercial and critical success and went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations, winning four including Best Supporting Actor for Jason Robards and Best Screenplay for William Goldman.
