'American Psycho' opened in theaters in the U.S. and Canada on this day in 2000. Director Mary Harron co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner based on Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel. Christian Bale stars as Patrick Bateman, a 1980s New York investment banker who leads a double life as a serial killer.
The movie opened to positive reviews with particular praise for its biting satire and Bales performance as the narcissistic Bateman. A direct-to-video sequel 'American Psycho 2' was released in 2002 that bore little relation to Harron's film. 'American Psycho' has grown in stature over the years and gone on to attract a sizeable cult following.
