'An American Werewolf in London' opened in theaters across North America on this day in 1981. Written and directed by John Landis, the horror comedy was an international co-production of the United Kingdom and the United States and stars David Naughton, Jenny Agutter, Griffin Dunne and John Woodvine. The movie was a critical and commercial success, going on to win the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup.

More than forty years since its initial release, 'An American Werewolf in London' is now firmly established as a cult classic. A less successful sequel: 'An American Werewolf in Paris' followed in 1997.
