'Beverly Hills Cop' opened in theaters across North America on this day in 1984. Martin Brest's buddy cop action comedy stars Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, a streetwise Detroit cop on the trail of his childhood friend's killer in Beverly Hills.

The movie was a critical and commercial success earning $234 million at the US box office alone and rocketing Murphy to international stardom. To date, Murphy has reprised the role three times for the sequels: 'Beverly Hills Cop II' (1987), 'Beverly Hills Cop III' (1994) and most recently, following a 30 year break, 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' (2024).
