English actor Basil Rathbone was born on this day in 1892. Rathbone rose to prominence in the United Kingdom as a Shakespearean actor before going on to appear in more than 70 films.

He was best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in fourteen Hollywood films between 1939 and 1946. Other notable roles include Mr. Murdstone in 'David Copperfield' (1935) and Sir Guy of Gisbourne in 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (1938). Basil Rathbone passed away in 1967 aged 75.
