American actress and filmmaker Jodie Foster was born on this day in 1962. After appearing in television adverts and numerous US TV shows, Foster's career in cinema began as a child actor for Disney with starring roles in 'Napoleon and Samantha' (1972), 'Freaky Friday' (1976) and 'Candleshoe' (1977) as well as the Alan Parker musical 'Bugsy Malone' (1976). These were interspersed with more serious dramatic roles in 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore' (1974), 'The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane' (1976) and Martin Scorsese's 'Taxi Driver' (1976) for which she received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Transitioning into mature leading roles she went on to win two Academy Awards for her performances in 'The Accused' (1988) and 'The Silence of the Lambs' (1991). She made her directorial debut with the well-received drama 'Little Man Tate' (1991). Other notable film credits include 'Foxes' (1980), 'The Hotel New Hampshire' (1984), 'Sommersby' (1993), 'Maverick' (1994), 'Nell' (1994), 'Contact' (1997), 'Anna and the King' (1999), 'Panic Room' (2002), 'Flightplan' (2005), 'Inside Man' (2006), 'Elysium' (2013), 'Hotel Artemis' (2018) and 'The Mauritanian' (2021).
