On This Day

Birthday of Keanu Reeves

September 2nd 1964

10:50 2 September 2024

Canadian actor Keanu Reeves was born on this day in 1964. Reeves began his acting career in theatre productions and TV films before he made his feature film debut in 'Youngblood' (1986). His breakthrough role came when he starred with Alex Winter in the hit comedy 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure' (1989). His performance in 'My Own Private Idaho' (1991) brought him critical acclaim and his status as one of Hollywood's leading action stars was confirmed with 'Point Break' (1991) and 'Speed' (1994).

After several poorly received films he was back on track starring alongside Al Pacino in 'The Devils Advocate' (1997) before one of his most iconic roles playing Neo in 'The Matrix' (1999) and its subsequent sequels. Reeves continued to divide his time between appearing in independent films and more mainstream movies with roles in 'The Replacements' (2000), 'Something's Gotta Give' (2003), 'Thumbsucker' (2005), 'Constantine' (2005), 'A Scanner Darkly' (2005), 'The Lake House' (2006) and 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (2008).

After a career lull in the early 2010's he had a major resurgence with the neo-noir action thriller 'John Wick' (2014). The success of the 'Wick' franchise and a return to playing an old favourite in 'Bill & Ted Face the Music' (2020) as well as a 'Matrix' reboot with 'The Matrix Resurrections' (2021) have seen Keanu Reeves firmly re-established as one of American cinemas biggest stars. Happy Birthday Keanu.
