American actor, director and musician Kevin Costner was born on this day in 1955. Costner made his film debut with a small role in ‘Malibu, Hot Summer’ (1981). Further small roles followed including a part in ‘The Big Chill’ (1983) but after his scenes were deleted from the final cut, director Lawrence Kasdan promised him a role in a future project. That role was in ‘Silverado’ (1985) and it proved a breakthrough for Costner. Movie star status arrived in 1988 with ‘The Untouchables’ and ‘No Way Out’ and the actor soon cemented his A-list status with starring roles in ‘Bull Durham’ (1988) and ‘Field of Dreams’ (1989).
He made his directorial debut with the acclaimed ‘Dances with Wolves’ (1990) which received twelve Academy Award nominations, winning seven including Best Picture and Best Director. Other significant film credits include ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ (1991), ‘JFK’ (1991), ‘The Bodyguard’ (1992), ‘A Perfect World’ (1993), ‘Wyatt Earp’ (1994), ‘Waterworld’ (1995), ‘Tin Cup’ (1996), ‘Open Range’ (2003), ‘Mr. Brooks’ (2007), ‘Man of Steel’ (2013), ‘Molly’s Game’ (2017), 'The Highwaymen' (2019) and 'Let Him Go' (2020). For nearly four decades Kevin Costner has remained one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors and filmmakers. Happy Birthday Kevin.
