American film director, producer, screenwriter and actor Martin Scorsese was born on this day in 1942. Scorsese made his feature directorial debut with ‘Who’s That Knocking at My Door’ (1967) starring fellow student Harvey Keitel, the first of several collaborations with the actor that spanned the following decades. His breakthrough film ‘Mean Streets’ (1973) also starring Keitel, began his association with Robert De Niro and was the first of nine films with the actor, the others being ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), ‘Raging Bull’ (1980), ‘New York, New York’ (1977), ‘The King of Comedy’ (1982), ‘Goodfellas’ (1990), ‘Cape Fear’ (1991), ‘Casino’ (1995) and ‘The Irishman’ (2019).
Scorsese has also collaborated successfully with Leonardo DiCaprio on the movies ‘Gangs of New York’ (2002), ‘The Aviator’ (2004), ‘The Departed’ (2006), ‘Shutter Island’ (2010), ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ (2013) and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ (2023).
Other notable film credits include ‘After Hours’ (1985), ‘The Color of Money’ (1986), ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ (1988), ‘The Age of Innocence’ (1993), ‘Bringing Out the Dead’ (1999), ‘Hugo’ (2016) and ‘Silence’ (2016) as well as the rock documentaries ‘The Last Waltz’ (1978) and ‘Shine a Light’ (2008). Martin Scorsese’s films have consistently received critical acclaim and accolades including nine Academy Award nominations for Best Director.
