American director, screenwriter and producer Michael Mann was born on this day in 1943. Mann came to prominence after writing and directing the Emmy Award-winning television movie 'The Jericho Mile' (1979), which had a theatrical release in Europe.

He made his feature-film directorial debut with 'Thief' (1981) starring James Caan, before serving as executive producer and showrunner on the hugely popular TV series 'Miami Vice' (1984-1990). His most acclaimed works as a film director include 'Manhunter' (1986), 'The Last of the Mohicans' (1992), 'Heat' (1995), 'The Insider' (1999), 'Collateral' (2004), 'Public Enemies' (2009), 'Blackhat' (2015) and 'Ferrari (2023).
