Hollywood star Natalie Wood was born on this day in 1938. The American actress began her film career as a child actor and made a successful transition to young adult roles. Among her best known early films are 'Rebel without a Cause' (1955), 'The Searchers' (1956), 'West Side Story' (1961) and 'Gypsy' (1962). Parts in movies with more mature themes followed such as 'Love with the Proper Stranger' (1963), 'Sex and the Single Girl' (1964), 'Inside Daisy Clover' (1964) and 'Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice' (1969).

In the 1970s she took a break from acting to have a child with husband Robert Wagner. A career revival in the 1980s was cut tragically short when she drowned whilst on vacation aged just 43.
