American film director and actor Quentin Tarantino was born on this day in 1963. Few filmmakers create the kind of impact Tarantino did when he wrote, directed and acted in his debut feature 'Reservoir Dogs' (1992). The classic crime thriller was an instant hit with critics and audiences and marked the arrival of an important new talent as well as setting the tone for future movies.
His follow up film, 'Pulp Fiction' (1994) was a massive hit, grossing over $200 million at the box office and remains one of the most iconic movies of the 1990s. It earned Tarantino a Best Original Screenplay Oscar as well as a Palme d'Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.
Throughout the 90s and into the new millennium, Tarantino has remained at the forefront of American cinema with the movies 'Jackie Brown'
(1997), 'Kill Bill: Volume 1' (2003), 'Kill Bill: Volume 2' (2004), 'Death Proof' (2007), 'Inglourious Basterds' (2009), 'Django Unchained' (2012), 'The Hateful Eight' (2015) and 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' (2019). In 2021 his debut novel was published, a novelization of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', followed in 2022 by 'Cinema Speculation: a collection of essays focussed on American films of the 1970s.
The director has publicly stated that his current project titled 'The Movie Critic' will be his final film so it remains to be seen where he takes us after that but its been one hell of a journey so far. Happy Birthday Quentin.
