English film director Ridley Scott was born on this day in 1937. Scott's career began in television as a director and designer before making his film directorial debut with 'The Duellists' (1977) which won him the award for Best Debut Film at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival as well as a Palme D'or nomination.
International recognition followed with his next feature. 'Alien' (1979) was not only a cultural milestone, spawning a long running franchise, but also one of the greatest science fiction films ever made and was followed three years later with the equally brilliant 'Blade Runner' (1982).
Other notable directing credits include 'Black Rain' (1989), 'Thelma & Louise' (1991), 'Gladiator' (2000), 'Black Hawk Down' (2001), 'Matchstick Men' (2003), 'A Good Year' (2006), 'American Gangster' (2007), 'Body of Lies' (2008), 'Robin Hood' (2010), 'The Martian' (2015), 'The Last Duel' (2021), 'The House of Gucci' (2021) and 'Napoleon' (2023).
Three time Academy Award nominee for Directing and the filmmaker responsible for some of the best films made in the last half-century, Ridley Scott continues to be one of the most important figures in cinema with the release of 'Gladiator II' (2024) earlier this month. Happy Birthday Sir Ridley.
