American actor, producer and director Robert De Niro was born on this day in 1943. After studying at the acting schools of Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler, De Niro had his first major role in 'Greetings' (1968). The first of his many successful collaborations with Martin Scorsese came when he played "Johnny Boy" in 'Mean Streets' (1973).
International recognition followed soon after for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in 'The Godfather Part II' (1974) for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He received two Academy award nominations for Best Actor for 'Taxi Driver' (1976) and 'The Deer Hunter' (1978). The Best Actor Oscar finally arrived when he played Jake LaMotta in 'Raging Bull' (1980).
De Niro remained prolific throughout the 80s and 90s starring in some of the greatest films of all time including 'Once Upon a Time in America' (1984), 'Goodfellas' (1990), 'Heat' (1995) and 'Casino' (1995). The late 90s and early 2000s saw him show his versatility as an actor with comedic roles in 'Wag the Dog' (1997), 'Analyze This' (1999) and 'Meet the Parents' (2000).
More recently he starred in 'Joker' (2019), 'The Irishman' (2019) and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ (2023). Without doubt one of the finest acting talents of his generation, Robert De Niro's career in film is matched by few. Happy Birthday Robert.
