American actor and Hollywood legend Robert Mitchum was born on this day in 1917. Mitchum made his name appearing in a series of film noirs in the 1940s before going on to star in a wide variety of films including westerns, war movies, thrillers, dramas and comedies.

Known for his rugged good looks and laconic style, Mitchum was modest about his acting talent, once saying "Look, I have two kinds of acting. One on a horse and one off a horse. That's it". He was in fact one of the greatest actors of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Robert Mitchum passed away at his home in California in 1997 aged 79.
