American actress and director Sally Field was born on this day in 1946. Field's career took off during the 1960s when she starred in the popular US TV comedy shows 'Gidget' (1965-1966), 'The Flying Nun' (1967-1970) and 'The Girl with Something Extra' (1973-1974). She received critical acclaim for her performance in the TV movie 'Sybil' (1976) for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress.
Her film career took off in the mid 70s with starring roles in 'Stay Hungry' (1976), 'Smokey and the Bandit' (1977), 'Heroes' (1977), 'The End' (1978), 'Hooper' (1978) and 'Norma Rae' (1979) for which she won her first Academy Award for Best Actress.
A second Best Actress Oscar came for her role in 'Places in the Heart' (1984). Other significant film credits include 'Absence of Malice' (1981), 'Kiss Me Goodbye' (1982), 'Murphy's Romance' (1985), 'Steel Magnolias' (1989), 'Soapdish' (1991), 'Mrs. Doubtfire' (1993), 'Forrest Gump' (1994), 'The Amazing Spider-Man' (2012), 'Lincoln' (2012), 'Hello, My Name is Doris' (2015), 'Spoiler Alert' (2022) and '80 for Brady' (2023).
