Neill first gained recognition when he appeared in the New Zealand action thriller 'Sleeping Dogs' (1977) which led to starring roles in 'My Brilliant Career' (1979), 'Omen III: The Final Conflict' (1981), 'A Cry in the Dark' (1988), 'Dead Calm' (1989). 'The Hunt For Red October' (1990) and 'The Piano' (1993).

International prominence came when he starred in the Steven Spielberg blockbuster 'Jurassic Park' (1993). Other notable film credits include 'Sirens' (1994), 'In the Mouth of Madness' (1994). 'Event Horizon' (1997), 'The Horse Whisperer' (1998), 'The Dish' (2000), 'Jurassic Park III' (2001), 'Under the Mountain' (2009), 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' (2016), 'Thor: Ragnarok' (2017), 'The Commuter' (2018), 'Jurassic World Dominion' (2022), 'Thor: Love and Thunder' (2022), 'Scarygirl' (2023) and 'Bring Him to Me' (2023).
