American actor Sam Rockwell was born on this day in 1968. Rockwell made his film debut in the low-budget horror film 'Clownhouse' (1989), after which his career slowly began to gain momentum through the early 90s with appearances in US TV shows and small parts in movies such as 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' (1990) and 'Basquiat' (1996). His breakthrough role came in 'Box of Moonlight' (1996) which brought him critical acclaim as did the following years 'Lawn Dogs' (1997) for which he won the Best Actor honours at the Montreal World Film Festival and the Catalan International Film Festival.
Other notable film credits include 'The Green Mile' (1999), 'Galaxy Quest' (1999), 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind' (2002), 'Matchstick Men' (2003), 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' (2005), 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' (2007), 'Frost/Nixon' (2008), 'Moon' (2009), 'Iron Man 2' (2010), 'Seven Psychopaths' (2012), 'The Way Way Back' (2013), 'Poltergeist' (2015), 'Vice' (2018), 'Richard Jewell' (2019), 'Jojo Rabbit' (2019), 'See How They Run' (2022) and 'Argylle' (2024).
A career highlight was his portrayal of a racist, bullying police officer in ' Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' (2017) for which he won the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor.
