American actress Sigourney Weaver was born on this day in 1949. Weaver made her film debut with a minor role in Woody Allen's 'Annie Hall' (1977). Her big breakthrough came when she played Ellen Ripley in 'Alien' (1979), a role she reprised several more times for the highly successful franchise, most notably in 'Aliens' (1986) for which she received an Academy Award Best Actress nomination.

She went on to become one of the worlds most successful actresses with starring roles in movies including  'The Year of Living Dangerously' (1982), 'Ghostbusters' (1984), 'Gorillas in the Mist' (1988), 'Working Girl' (1988), (for the previous two she won the Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in Drama and Best Supporting Actress, the first time someone has won two acting Golden Globes in the same year) 'Ghostbusters II' (1989), 'Copycat' (1995), 'The Ice Storm' (1997) (for which she won a BAFTA Best Supporting Actress Award), 'Galaxy Quest' (1999), 'Avatar' (2009), 'A Monster Calls' (2016), 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' (2021) and 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (2022).
