English actor, broadcaster, comedian, director and writer Stephen Fry was born on this day in 1957. Fry came to prominence in the 1980s on British television as one half of the comedy double act Fry and Laurie, alongside Hugh Laurie. Their TV work includes 'A Bit of Fry & Laurie' (1989-1995), Jeeves and Wooster (1990-1993) and 'Blackadder' (1986-1999).

Among his film roles is his portrayal of Oscar Wilde in 'Wilde' (1997) for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Other notable film credits include appearances in 'Chariots of Fire' (1981), 'A Fish Called Wanda' (1988), 'Peter's Friends' (1992), 'Gosford Park' (2001), 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellers' (2004), 'V for Vendetta' (2005), 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' (2011), 'The Hobbit' film series (2012-2014), 'Red, White & Royal Blue' (2023) and 'Treasure' (2024).
