American actor, comedian, writer, producer and musician Steve Martin was born on this day in 1945. Martin rose to prominence in the 1960s writing comedy for US TV shows before becoming a frequent host on 'Saturday Night Live' in the 1970s. He went on to perform his stand up comedy routines in front of large audiences on tours across the US and starred in his first feature film 'The Jerk' (1979) directed by Carl Reiner. Three further collaborations with Reiner followed with 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid' (1982), 'The Man With Two Brains' (1983) and 'All of Me' (1984). Martin remained prolific throughout the 80s and 90s starring in a string of hit comedies including 'Three Amigos' (1986), 'Little Shop of Horrors' (1986), 'Roxanne' (1987), 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' (1987), 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' (1988), 'Parenthood' (1989), 'L.A. Story' (1991), 'Father of the Bride' (1991) and 'HouseSitter' (1992) as well as straight roles in 'Grand Canyon' (1991) and 'The Spanish Prisoner' (1997).
More recently Martin has starred in the hit TV show 'Only Murders in the Building' as well as focussing on his writing as a novelist and playwright and music as a banjo player where he has recorded and toured with various bluegrass acts and won five Grammy Awards. Happy Birthday Steve.
