American film director, producer and screenwriter Steven Spielberg was born on this day in 1946. A filmmaker for more than 50 years now, Spielberg's movies have, by and large, been hugely popular with audiences and critics alike, grossing an astounding $10.1 billion at the box office worldwide, making him the top-grossing director of all time, even without adjusting for inflation.
From his breakthrough hit 'Jaws' (1975), his films throughout the 70s and 80s such as 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1978), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), the 'Indiana Jones' series, 'The Color Purple' (1987) and 'Empire of the Sun' (1987) made him into a household name.
Further commercial success and accolades followed into the 90s with 'Schindler's List' (1993), 'Jurassic Park' (1993) and 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998). The new millennium saw him continue his dominance in Hollywood with 'Minority Report' (2002), 'War of the Worlds' (2005), 'War Horse' (2011), 'Lincoln' (2012), 'The Post' (2017), ‘Ready Player One’ (2018), 'West Side Story' (2021) and ‘The Fabelmans’ (2022).
Quite simply one of the greatest film directors of all time. Happy Birthday Steven.
