American actor, filmmaker and musician Tim Robbins was born on this day in 1958. Robbins made his screen debut in the US television series 'St Elsewhere' in 1982. Further TV work followed with roles in 'Moonlighting' and 'The Love Boat' as well as making his film debut in 'Toy Soldiers' (1984). After playing Lt Sam "Merlin" Wells in 'Top Gun' (1986) he got his breakthrough role with his portrayal of Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh in the baseball film 'Bull Durham' (1988).
Critical acclaim and the first of two Golden Globe Awards came with his title role in Robert Altman's 'The Player' (1992). Robbins made his directorial debut with 'Bob Roberts' (1992) before what is probably one of the defining roles of his career playing Andy Dufresne in 'The Shawshank Redemption' (1994).
For his second film as director he received a Best Director Academy Award nomination for 'Dead Man Walking' (1995). Other notable film credits include 'Jacob's Ladder' (1990), 'Short Cuts' (1993), 'The Hudsucker Proxy' (1994), 'Arlington Road' (1999), 'Mystic River' (2003), 'War of the Worlds' (2005), 'Life of Crime' (2013) and 'Dark Waters' (2019).
