American filmmaker Todd Haynes was born on this day in 1961. Haynes first gained attention with his controversial short film 'Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story' (1987) which has gone on to become a cult classic. He received further acclaim for his feature directorial debut 'Poison' (1991) which won the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize.

Other notable directing credits include 'Safe' (1995), 'Velvet Goldmine' (1998), 'Far From Heaven' (2002), 'Carol' (2015), 'Dark Waters' (2019), his documentary about the legendary New York rock band 'The Velvet Underground' (2021) and more recently ‘May December’ (2023). Happy Birthday Todd.
