Hollywood superstar Tom Hanks was born on this day in 1956. The American actor and filmmaker is one of the most popular and instantly recognisable film stars in the world. Hanks rose to prominence after appearing in a series of comedies throughout the 80s and early 90s including 'Splash' (1984), 'Batchelor Party' (1984), 'Big' (1988) and 'A League of Their Own' (1992).
Proving he was equally capable of playing serious dramatic roles he won two consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor for 'Philadelphia' (1993) and 'Forest Gump' (1994). 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998) was the first of several collaborations with director Steven Spielberg.
Other notable film credits include 'Apollo 13' (1995), 'The Green Mile' (1999), 'Cast Away' (2000), 'Road to Perdition' (2002), 'The Terminal' (2004), 'The Da Vinci Code' (2006), 'Bridge of Spies' (2015), 'Sully: Miracle on the Hudson' (2016), 'The Post' (2017), 'Finch' (2021) and 'A Man Called Otto' (2022).
