American actress, author, comedian and television personality Whoopi Goldberg was born on this day in 1955. Goldberg made her movie debut in the drama 'Citizen' (1982). Her big film breakthrough came when she starred in Steven Spielberg's 'The Color Purple' (1985) for which she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and received an Academy Award nomination.
The 80s were a very productive period for Goldberg with starring roles in films including 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' (1986), 'Burglar' (1987), 'Fatal Beauty' (1987) and 'The Telephone' (1988). 'Ghost' (1990) was a big hit at the box office and she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as psychic Oda Mae Brown.
The comedy 'Sister Act' (1992) and its sequel 'Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit' (1993) were hugely popular and made her the highest-paid actress at that time.
Other film credits include 'The Lion King' (1994), 'Eddie' (1996), 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back' (1998), 'Girl Interrupted' (1999), 'Toy Story 3 (2010) and '9/11' (2017). Whoopi Goldberg continues to maintain a high profile, alternating between film and TV work and with 'Sister Act 3' scheduled for release next year, she remains a much loved star.
