'Cabaret' opened in theaters in the U.S. on this day in 1972. Bob Fosse's musical drama, starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, is set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic in 1931 under the increasing presence of the Nazi Party.

Based loosely on the 1966 Broadway musical of the same name which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood's 1945 semi-autobiographical novel 'The Berlin Stories' and the 1951 play 'I Am a Camera', the movie was a big hit both critically and commercially and went on to receive ten Academy Award nominations, winning eight including Oscars for Fosse, Minnelli and Grey.
