'Captain Phillips' was released in theaters across the US on this day in 2013. Directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips, the film tells the true story of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking by Somali pirates.

Greengrass' movie was a commercial and critical success, receiving multiple Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations with Barkhad Abdi winning the BAFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting role for his portrayal of pirate leader Abduwali Muse.
