Brian De Palma’s 'Carrie' was released in theaters in the US on this day in 1976. Based on Stephen King’s first published novel, the movie was also the first of more than 100 film and television productions that have since been adapted from, or based on, King’s published works.

The movie opened to positive reviews and was a smash at the box office, grossing $33.8 million off a budget of just $1.8 million.

Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie both received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively with ‘Carrie’ widely considered to be one of the best horror films ever made.
