The premiere of 'Casablanca' took place at the Hollywood Theater in New York City  on this day in 1942. The classic romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman was scheduled for release in early 1943 but the date was brought forward to take advantage of the publicity surrounding the Allied invasion of North Africa that had taken the place a few weeks earlier.

The movie was moderately successful on its initial run but went on to surpass expectations by winning the Academy Award for Best Picture and has long been considered to be one of the greatest films ever made.
