'Chicago' opened in theaters in the US on this day in 2002. Based on the 1975 stage musical, Rob Marshall’s big screen directorial debut stars Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere. A critical and commercial success, the movie received 12 Academy Award nominations, winning 6 including Best Picture, the first musical to win the prestigious Oscar since ‘Oliver!’ in 1968.
