'Conan the Barbarian' opened in 1400 theaters across North America on this day in 1982. John Milius's sword and sorcery epic from a script by Milius and Oliver Stone and based on Robert E. Howard's Conan, stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role.

The movie opened to mixed reviews, receiving praise for its direction and production values but a negative response for its violent content and screenwriting. Despite this the film was a big hit at the box office and spawned a sequel 'Conan the Destroyer' (1984).
