The premiere of 'Dances with Wolves' was held at the Uptown Theater in Washington D.C. on this day in 1990. Kevin Costner's feature directorial debut opened to favourable reviews and was one of the years biggest box-office hits, grossing more than $424 million off a budget of $22 million. It went on to receive 12 Academy Award nominations, winning seven, making it one of only three westerns to win the Best Picture Oscar, the other two being 'Cimarron' (1931) and 'Unforgiven' (1992).
