'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' opened in theaters across the United States and Canada on this day in 2014. The sequel to 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (2014), which began 20th Century Fox's reboot of the Planet of the Apes series, once again starred Andy Serkis as leader of the apes Caesar. Set 10 years after the events of the first film, 'Dawn' follows a group of humans in San Francisco struggling to stay alive in the aftermath of a plague that has wiped out most of humanity while Caesar tries to keep control of his army of apes.

The movie opened to very positive reviews and was a huge hit at the box office worldwide grossing $710.6 million from a budget of $170 million. The apes trilogy was completed three years later with 'War for the Planet of the Apes' (2017). A fourth instalment ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ was released earlier this year.
