'Field of Dreams' opened in US theaters on this day in 1989. Phil Alden Robinson's sports fantasy drama, based on the 1982 novel 'Shoeless Joe' by W.P. Kinsella, stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends.

Co-starring Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster (in his final film role), the movie opened to positive reviews and was a box office success, grossing $84.4 million off a budget of $15 million.
