'Full Metal Jacket' opened in U.S. theaters on this day in 1987. Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam War drama follows a platoon of U.S. marines through their boot camp training and then into combat in the Vietnamese cities of Da Nang and Huế during the Tet offensive.

The movie received critical acclaim and was a box office success, grossing $120 million against a budget of $16 million. It was the last of Kubrick's films to be released during his lifetime and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. 'Full Metal Jacket' is considered to be among the greatest war films ever made.
