The premiere of George Steven's epic western drama 'Giant' took place at the Roxy Theatre in New York City on this day in 1956.

Starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean in the last of his three leading roles before his untimely death, the movie went on to be a huge box-office success earning Warner Brothers $35 million in ticket sales during its original release, a record for the studio that remained until 'Superman' played in theaters in the late 1970s. The film was also nominated for ten Academy Awards with Stevens winning for best director.
