Martin Scorsese's gangster epic 'Goodfellas' was released in theaters in the USA and Canada on this day in 1990. Adapted from the book 'Wiseguy' by Nicholas Pileggi and starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino, 'Goodfellas' tells the story of the rise and eventual downfall of mob associate Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and his friends and family between 1955 and 1980.

Made on a budget of $25 million, the movie was Scorsese's most expensive to date but still only medium-budget by Hollywood standards, it went on to nearly double its costs at the box office worldwide.

Nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director with Joe Pesci winning for Best Supporting Actor, Scorsese's film is a cinematic masterpiece and contender for the greatest gangster movie of all time.
