'Highlander' opened in theaters in the U.S. on this day in 1986. Russell Malcahy’s fantasy action-adventure film stars Christopher Lambert, Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown and Sean Connery and tells the story of immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) who faces one final battle with the brutal Kurgan (Clancy Brown) to win “the prize” at the gathering in modern day New York.

The movie fared badly at the box office on it’s initial release and received mixed reviews. It went on to gain a large cult following and spawned a franchise that includes several sequels and television shows.
