'It Happened One Night' opened in theaters across the U.S. on this day in 1934. Frank Capra's romantic comedy starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert was a huge hit at the box office, becoming Columbia Pictures biggest success until the late 1980s.

It was also the first of only three films to win the "Big Five" Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Writing). The other two being 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' in 1976 and 'The Silence of the Lambs' in 1992.
