The premiere of 'Mary Poppins' was held at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on this day in 1964. Walt Disney's musical fantasy features Julie Andrews in her screen debut as the magical nanny who mysteriously descends from the the windy skies to take charge of two young children in Edwardian London.

With its combination of live action and animation and iconic songs, 'Mary Poppins' went on to become the highest-grossing film of 1964 as well as receiving 13 Academy Award nominations, winning five including a Best Actress Oscar for Julie Andrews.
