Mickey Mouse made his first screen appearance on this day in 1928 in 'Plane Crazy'. The silent film was given a test screening to a theater audience but generated little interest and failed to pick up a distributor.

Later in the year Disney released the first Mickey Mouse sound cartoon 'Steamboat Willie' which was a huge success and led to 'Plane Crazy' being released as a sound cartoon in 1929.
