Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's 'The Shining' opened in theaters in the United States on this day in 1980. Several theatrical versions were released, each one shorter than the last, resulting in 27 minutes being cut in total.
Reactions to Kubrick's movie were mixed with author King criticising it for its deviations from the novel. 'The Shining' is now widely regarded as a horror masterpiece. A sequel: 'Doctor Sleep' was released in 2019.
