'Memento' opened in theaters in the US on this day in 2001. Christopher Nolan’s neo-noir mystery thriller stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man who is suffering from anterograde amnesia, causing short-term memory loss and the inability to form new memories.

Shelby is searching for the people who attacked and killed his wife and uses a complex system of Polaroid photographs and tattoos to track information he cannot remember. The movie opened to critical acclaim and earned $40 million on a budget of $4.5 million.

‘Memento’ received numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing and is widely considered to be one of Nolan’s best films.
