The premiere of 'Metropolis' took place at the UFA-Palast am Zoo cinema in Berlin on this day in 1927. Fritz Lang's expressionist science-fiction drama took 17 months to film at a cost of more than five million Reichsmarks, which today is equivalent to about €19,000,000.

Lang's silent feature length classic set in a futuristic urban dystopia was met with mixed reviews but is now widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.
