'Mildred Pierce' premiered at the Strand theatre in New York on this day in 1945. The classic film noir, based on the 1941 novel by James M. Cain, stars Joan Crawford in the title role as a woman trying to raise her two daughters after divorcing her first husband and then becoming embroiled in a police investigation after the death of her second husband.

Joan Crawford won her first and only Best Actress Academy Award for 'Mildred Pierce' but was unable to attend the ceremony due to illness. Director Michael Curtiz presented a bedridden Crawford her Oscar.
