'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' opened in theaters in the U.S. on this day in 1987. John Hughes classic comedy stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, a marketing executive struggling to get home to Chicago from New York for Thanksgiving, and John Candy as Del Griffith, a shower curtain ring salesman, who becomes his travel companion for the journey.

Upon it’s release ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ received very favourable reviews with praise in particular for Martin and Candy for their performances and Hughes for a change in direction after being primarily associated with teen comedies.
