'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' opened in theaters in the US on this day in 1967. The third installment of Sergio Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach had been released in Italy just over a year previously.

The film received mixed reviews from American critics who were largely dismissive of the "Spaghetti Western' genre but was a big hit with audiences and helped catapult Eastwood to stardom. Leone's epic has gained critical acclaim over the years and is now considered a masterpiece and one the greatest westerns ever made.
