'On the Waterfront' opened in theaters across North America on this day in 1954. Director Elia Kazan filmed the story of union violence and corruption on the waterfronts of New Jersey over 36 days.
The movie was largely responsible for establishing Marlon Brando as one of the foremost acting talents of his generation. An excellent supporting cast includes Karl Malden. Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, Pat Henning and Eva Marie Saint.
Nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winning eight including Best Picture, Best Actor for Brando, Best Actress for Saint and Best Director for Kazan, 'On the Waterfront' is one of the greatest American films of all time.
